Can you use wood flooring with underfloor heating?
Yes. Provided you choose a high-quality engineered board and have it installed appropriately, engineered wood flooring can be a fantastic choice to use over underfloor heating. Engineered wood is built to cope with a heated subfloor and it’s one of the most common things customers mention when they order from us. Solid wood flooring generally isn’t advised – more on this later.
That said, a floor described as “suitable for underfloor heating” is telling you something about the board. It isn’t telling you whether it suits your specific heating system. Those are two different questions, and answering both early will narrow your options fast, rather than leaving you to fall for a floor that was never going to work with your UFH system.
Why engineered wood copes with heat better than solid
All wood moves – it’s a porous material that absorbs moisture from the environment, causing it to expand and contract, and heated floors can drive that cycle harder. Solid timber is a single piece of wood, so it moves as a single piece. Over a heat source that can mean an increased amount of movement, potentially causing gaps between boards or problematic expansion.
A high-quality engineered wood floor is put together differently. The hardwood you see sits on a plywood core, and the layers of that core are bonded with their grain running across one another so that each layer acts to hold the next one still. That cross-bonded structure is what keeps the board stable, and it’s the main reason engineered wood is the sensible choice over underfloor heating. Quality counts here as well. A well-made core with plenty of thin, even layers (which make up the multi-laminate plywood core) will hold its shape better with heat than a cheap one with fewer thick layers.
The two sides of underfloor heating compatibility
The first side is the floor itself: how stable and reliable the board will be over a heated surface. That comes down to construction and quality, which is what we’ve just covered.
The second side is your specific underfloor heating system: how efficiently and effectively it will warm the room through the floor you’ve chosen. That comes down to your UFH system, its heat output and installation method.
Both sides matter equally. The second is the one people often never think to ask about when initially searching for their wooden floor.
Board thickness is usually the deciding factor
Some underfloor heating systems specify a maximum flooring thickness. This is most common with electrical systems and retrofit water systems (the sort that sit on top of an existing subfloor rather than being buried in a screed). The thicker the board, the more material the heat has to travel through to reach the room.
This means the same board can be right for some systems and not for others. For example, a 21mm floor might be an excellent choice over a screeded UFH system and completely unsuitable over an electric mat.
So before you shortlist anything, ask your underfloor heating supplier or installer one question: is there a maximum flooring thickness for this system? Get an actual number, in mm, then look for the best quality board that sits inside it. It takes five minutes and it can save you weeks of looking at floors you can’t have.
What to check before you buy
Maximum board thickness – from your underfloor heating supplier or installer, in millimetres, before you start choosing floors.
Board construction – look for a good plywood core with multiple thin hardwood layers, not a cheap board that happens to carry an underfloor heating tick.
Finished floor height – the board plus any underlay or adhesive has to work with your door clearances, thresholds and any adjoining floors.
Installation method (heat transfer) – ensure that you use an installation method that will be effective for heat transfer and ensure all glues / underlays are designed for use with underfloor heating.
Installation method (stability) – some installation methods will provide more strength and stability than others. Speak to your flooring supplier regarding installation options and those that are best suited for UFH systems. Then, run these installation options / products by your installers and UFH suppliers if necessary.
Where the heating actually runs – if only part of the house is heated, the same floor has to work in both the heated and unheated rooms. Will the installation method remain the same, or will a different installation method be used in different areas? If the latter, will this affect finished floor heights? These nuances differ from property to property so a discussion with an informed wood flooring supplier and your installers is always the best approach.

Common questions
Can you put engineered wood flooring over underfloor heating?
Yes. A high quality engineered wood floor (preferably based on a multi-ply core) is the recommended type of wood flooring for underfloor heating because its core is cross-bonded, which keeps the board more stable and reliable over a heated floor. You still need to check that the board thickness suits your particular heating system, and that it’s fitted to the manufacturer’s requirements.
Can you use solid wood flooring over underfloor heating?
It generally isn’t advised. Solid wood is a single piece of timber, so it expands and contracts as one, and a heated subfloor can make that movement worse. If you want the look of solid oak over underfloor heating, an engineered board gives you the same surface (and therefore look) with far better stability.
What thickness of wood flooring is best over underfloor heating?
There’s no single best thickness, because it’s set by your heating system rather than by the floor. Screed based systems will usually take thicker boards happily. Electric mats and retrofit water systems often specify a maximum. Ask your underfloor heating supplier for their figure first, then choose the best quality board within those tolerances.
A floor says it’s suitable for underfloor heating. Will it work with my system?
Not necessarily, and this is the point worth remembering. That description refers to the board’s construction and stability over a heated floor. It says nothing about whether your system can push enough heat through it, or whether your system stipulates a maximum thickness of floor that can go over it. Check the board and check the system separately.
